There are various legends and meanings associated with the sand dollar, the most common of which states that when you break open the centre, you will release five white doves that will spread peace and good will throughout the earth. Another legend claims that sand dollars are the accidentally dropped coins of mermaids which get washed ashore on stormy nights.

Gold filled vs gold vermeil vs gold plated:

Gold plated = very thin layer of gold over top of a base metal such as copper or brass. (Gold layer is about .05 microns in thickness.)

Gold vermeil = very thin layer of gold over top of silver. (Gold layer is about 2.5 microns in thickness.)

Gold fill = thick layer of gold over top of either brass or silver. (Gold layer has to comprise at least 5% of the item by weight.)
